Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh Mahila Congress on Monday burnt an effigy of state minister Vijay Shah in Bhopal, protesting against his alleged threatening remarks directed at women beneficiaries of the Ladli Behna scheme. The organisation demanded that the minister withdraw his statement and called upon foreign his removal from the state cabinet.

Mahila Congress state president Reena Baurasi Setia said that Shah’s reported comments during a meeting of officials suggesting that women beneficiaries who fail to attend the Chief Minister’s programmes should be subjected to scrutiny were deeply insulting and unacceptable. She asserted that assistance provided under the Ladli Behna scheme was the rightful entitlement of women and not a favour extended by the government.

Calling the remarks shameful, Setia said the protest was organised to oppose such intimidation. She added that similar demonstrations would be held across the state, with memoranda submitted at district levels demanding Shah’s dismissal. Several Mahila Congress leaders and workers participated in the protest.
