Watermelon-sized ovarian tumor removed at SMH

Bhopal: In a remarkable medical feat, Dr. Shivani Badal Acharya, Gynecologist and Obstetrician at Sagar Multispecialty Hospital (SMH), Bhopal, successfully removed a massive ovarian lump using laparoscopic surgery. A 24-year-old woman had been experiencing persistent abdominal heaviness and pain. Upon undergoing sonography at SMH Diagnostics, doctors discovered lumps in both her ovaries. An MRI revealed a large tumor in the left ovary, measuring approximately 31x23x12 cm—about the size of a watermelon—and a 5 to 7 cm dermoid cyst in the right ovary, roughly the size of an orange.

Despite consulting several hospitals, all recommended open surgery. The patient, however, sought a minimally invasive option. Dr. Acharya and her team performed the laparoscopic surgery successfully removing both lumps through small incisions without harming the ovaries. The patient’s reproductive health was preserved, and she was discharged the next day after a stable recovery. This case highlights the advanced gynecological expertise available at SMH and the benefits of laparoscopic surgery for complex ovarian conditions.
