Vice President to attend World Sickle Cell Day program today

Bhopal: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar will attend the state level program on World Sickle Cell Day-2024 at Government Chandravijay Mahavidyalaya Dindori on 19 June 2024 at 11.00 am. Governor Shri Mangubhai Patel, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav and Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla will be present in the program.

Efforts to eliminate sickle cell in MP

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the ‘State Hemoglobinopathy Mission’ on 15 November 2021, Tribal Pride Day, for the prevention and treatment of sickle cell anemia. In the mission, a total of 9 lakh 17 thousand population was screened under the pilot project in Alirajpur and Jhabua districts.

49.17 lakh people screened

In the second phase, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the ‘Sickle Cell Eradication Mission’- 2047 at the national level on 1 July 2023 from Shahdol district. 17 states of the country are included in the ‘National Sickle Cell Eradication Mission’.

In the mission, sickle cell screening of about 1 crore 11 lakh citizens is to be done in 89 development blocks of tribal dominated districts of Madhya Pradesh. So far, 49 lakh 17 thousand population has been screened in the second phase. Out of which 1 lakh 20 thousand 493 sickle carriers and 18 thousand 182 sickle patients have been identified.

Testing in dist hospitals

To strengthen the testing and treatment facilities of sickle cell patients, a confirmation test has been arranged by HPLC machine in every district hospital. Apart from this, other tests like CBC, Total Iron, Serum Ferritin etc. are being provided free of cost. Sickle cell anemia confirmation test is being conducted by POC kits at the screening site to obtain quick test results and manage sickle cell anemia patients.

Lab in AIIMS Bhopal for testing newborns

A lab has been set up in AIIMS Bhopal for special testing of newborns within 72 hours of birth and testing of samples sent from tribal dominated districts has been started. Training and technical support for screening and management of sickle cell anemia is being provided by ICMR NIRTH, Jabalpur. Under this, managerial and medical staff posted in all 89 tribal dominated development blocks of the state as well as field workers have been trained.

To prevent the spread of sickle cell disease to the next generation, pre-natal diagnosis of pregnant women is being done with the help of ‘Sankalp India’. Treatment and follow-up booklets have been prepared to ensure the availability of treatment, medicine and complete management and continuous monitoring to sickle cell patients identified in the screening.
