Damascus, Dec 20 (UNI) UN agencies and their partners have provided food assistance to more than 1.3 million people in Syria since November 27, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.
“Since 27 November, more than 1.3 million people have received food aid across the country, including hot meals, ready-to-eat rations and food baskets … In Aleppo, bakeries have resumed activities at near full capacity, but partners report that they observe long queues and crowding,” the organisation said in a statement on Thursday.
The statement added that reconstruction of key facilities has also begun in relatively stable areas in northwest Syria, including hospitals in Homs and road repairs in Aleppo.
Syria’s armed opposition captured Damascus on December 8. Russian officials said that Syrian President Bashar Assad stepped down after negotiations with participants in the Syrian conflict and left Syria for Russia, where he was granted asylum.
Mohammed al-Bashir, who ran an Idlib-based administration formed by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and other opposition groups, was named interim prime minister last week. He later announced that an interim government had been formed and would remain in place until March 2025.
