UMA brings Kerala’s Onam spirit to Bhopal

Bhopal: The Campion School Auditorium in Arera Colony was transformed into a vibrant cultural hub as the United Malayalee Association (UMA) celebrated Onam with grandeur and tradition. The event attracted an unprecedented turnout, with families, youth, and dignitaries joining to mark Kerala’s most cherished festival in the heart of Bhopal.

The celebration was graced by senior officials including Raghuraj M.R., IAS, Secretary to the MP Government’s Labour Department; Anju Arun Kumar, IAS, CEO, Smart City; and John Kingsley, IAS, Secretary, Narmada Valley Development Department, among others. Their presence highlighted the Malayalee community’s integration within Madhya Pradesh’s cultural fabric.

Welcoming the gathering, UMA President OD Joseph emphasised that Onam was not only a celebration of tradition but also of unity, equality, and shared prosperity. From intricate Pookalams and the grand Thiruvathira to the traditional Onasadya and cultural showcases, the weeklong event reflected the community’s collective strength and enduring values.

The cultural performances stood out, with more than 100 participants presenting traditional Kerala dance forms under the themes Keralaliya Nritya Sangamam and Nritya Sangamam. Highlights included semi-classical, folk, and fusion dance, alongside a memorable solo by Ms. Tanishka. The arrival of King Mahabali was met with cheers, while George Clinton’s magic show added surprise and wonder.

The felicitation of composer Ankit Menon brought pride to the community, while Malayalam actor and comedian Sajan Palluruthy enthralled the audience with humour and inspiration.

The evening concluded with a prize distribution ceremony, especially for the Pookalam contest, followed by a Vote of Thanks from UMA’s Linu Varghese. The celebration reaffirmed UMA’s commitment to preserving Kerala’s cultural heritage while fostering unity and harmony in Madhya Pradesh.
