Manchester, Oct 3 (UNI/SPUTNIK) UK law enforcement believes the attack on a Manchester synagogue was carried out by a British citizen of Syrian descent, Manchester police said.

Yesterday morning, an unknown individual drove a car into people and then attacked them with a knife outside a synagogue on Middleton Road in Manchester. According to the latest data, two people have died, the attacker was shot dead, while three others are in a critical condition.

“We are now able to confirm that, although formal identification is yet to take place, we believe the person responsible for today’s attacks is 35-year-old Jihad Al-Shamie. He is a British citizen of Syrian descent,” police said in a statement yesterday.

The statement added that three injured people remain in hospital.

“We can confirm that three suspects are currently in custody and have been arrested on suspicion of commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism. They are two men in their 30s and a woman in her 60s,” the statement read.

At the same time, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer noted that the attack on the synagogue indicates a rise in anti-Semitism in the country.
