New Delhi, Aug 28 (UNI) Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, along with Transport Minister Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh, on Thursday flagged off buses for the Delhi University students under the U-Special scheme, relaunching the popular travel option in the national capital.
CM, speaking on the occasion, said that these ‘University Special Buses’ starting from Thursday will provide the students with a safe, reliable and dedicated mode of transport, ensuring better connectivity.
Gupta said that this U-special is not just a bus; it is a moving space for things like friendships, chit-chat and creating cheerful memories of college life.
The CM said that these new buses, which are now better equipped, will enhance connectivity for students between North Campus, South Campus, JNU, IIT Delhi and other institutions in the city.
Speaking to reporters, Gupta said that the service had been closed for years, and she accused the previous governments of not giving it due importance.
Gupta informed us that the schedule of these buses has been set as per the college timings so that the students can get the maximum benefit out of the service.
Recalling her college days, Gupta shared that during the year 1998, when she had left university, she had some very dear memories with the U-special.
She further stated that now she is back to the varsity with the revamped U-special service, with buses equipped with FM radio, air conditioning, panic buttons for safety, and other modern facilities.
Gupta said that this will not only give DU students the same old respect and energy but will also provide clean air to the city, as the buses are EVs.
On this occasion, people who were present included MP Manoj Tiwari, Delhi government’s cabinet minister Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh, and Timarpur MLA Surya Prakash Khatri, along with other esteemed individuals.
The aim is to redefine student mobility, making every ride safer, smoother and smarter.
It is said that the buses are not just about connecting campuses but about bridging education with opportunity and aspiration, driving dreams closer to a brighter tomorrow.
“This is the place where I took the route of struggle, and also the courage and self-confidence were also gained from here.”
Speaking about the development, Transport Minister Singh expressed gratitude to the CM for relaunching the U-Special buses within a month of the announcement.
He said that under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Delhi is being developed into a world-class city, adding that DTC’s U-Special buses will operate on more than 25 routes, connecting 67 colleges of DU’s North and South Campuses.
