Azamgarh, March 5 (UNI) The festive joy of Holi turned into mourning in a village of Azamgarh district, Uttar Pradesh, after two teenage girls tragically drowned in a pond, police said on Thursday.
The incident occurred in Fattanpur Mustafabad village under the Nizamabad police station area when two friends went to bathe in a nearby pond after playing Holi on Wednesday.
The victims have been identified as 14-year-old Anshika and 18-year-old Shivangi.
According to Nizamabad Station House Officer (SHO) Hirendra Pratap Singh, the girls had been celebrating Holi with family members and friends. After playing with colours, they went to the village pond to wash themselves. While bathing, they accidentally moved from the shallow edge toward deeper water and began to drown, reportedly unaware of the pond’s depth.
Hearing their cries for help, nearby villagers and family members rushed to the spot and jumped into the pond. After considerable effort, both girls were pulled out and immediately taken to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Rani Ki Sarai. However, doctors declared them dead upon examination.
The tragic news sparked scenes of grief and panic among the families and villagers, turning the festival atmosphere into one of deep sorrow.
Police from Nizamabad station reached the scene soon after receiving information about the incident. The bodies were taken into custody, and after completing the necessary legal formalities, they were sent for post-mortem examination. Authorities have begun further investigation into the incident.
