Chronicle Reporter, Bhopal
The Government Railway Police (GRP) has arrested two criminals involved in stealing mobile phones from train passengers and using stolen SIM cards to commit online fraud. The duo, who targeted travelers on moving trains, had been illegally withdrawing money through digital transactions. Police recovered gold and silver jewelry along with cash and valuables worth ?2.5 lakh.

The case came to light when Anees Khan, a passenger on the Jabalpur-Amravati Express, reported his mobile stolen on December 20 near Betul Railway Station. Later, unauthorized online transactions were made using his stolen SIM. With help from Bhopal Cyber Cell, GRP tracked suspicious transactions, leading them to Hoshangabad Railway Station, where they arrested Leeladhar Raghuvanshi (27) and Durgesh Kushwaha (26), both residents of Kalmeshra, Sohagpur.

Upon interrogation, the accused revealed their modus operandi—they would steal mobile phones, immediately switch them off, extract the SIM cards, and insert them into another device. Using platforms like PhonePe and Google Pay, they fraudulently transferred money from victims’ accounts.

Apart from cash, police recovered multiple stolen mobile phones, SIM cards, and jewelry. Additional fraud and theft charges have been filed against them. The GRP team, led by station in-charge Pramod Patil, played a key role in the arrests.
