Berlin, Aug 14 (UNI) US President Donald Trump assured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders of briefing them on the outcome of talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska immediately after the end of the meeting, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said.
“We wished President Trump all the best. We agreed that immediately after the meeting with President Putin, he will first brief Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and then directly the European heads of state and government who are united by this initiative,” Merz said at a joint press conference with Zelenskyy in Berlin on Wednesday.
The Chancellor believes that Trump should hold talks in Alaska as part of a common “transatlantic strategy” that relies on continuing intensive support for Ukraine and exerting “the necessary pressure” on Russia. According to Merz, the United States and Europeans “will be obliged” to increase this pressure if there is no “necessary progress” in the talks in Alaska.
Merz organized an online meeting to reach a consensus among Western leaders ahead of the upcoming talks between Putin and Trump in Alaska. Zelenskyy arrived in Berlin to participate in the meeting.
