  • Jeevan Bala Dawar’s traditional jewelry bridges heritage and modernity

Bhopal: The City of Lakes, recently witnessed a vibrant display of tribal artistry at the NIFT exhibition, where Jeevan Bala Dawar from Jobat tehsil, Alirajpur district, captivated visitors with her exquisite traditional jewelry. Her collection—necklaces, bracelets, and earrings—reflects the cultural richness of the Bhagoria festival and tribal wedding ceremonies, drawing keen interest from art lovers and potential buyers alike.

Jeevan Bala Dawar learned this intricate craft at the age of 16 from her mother-in-law, Shantibai Nathaniel, who continued creating art until the remarkable age of 94. Today, Jeevan carries forward the legacy, with her entire family, including her son Neeraj Dawar, actively supporting her work. She dedicates every spare moment to her art, seeing it not just as a livelihood but as a commitment to preserving her tribal identity and cultural heritage.

Her talent has transcended borders

Her talent has transcended borders, with exhibitions across India in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kochi, Ernakulam, and Bhopal, as well as internationally in Sharjah and Dubai. Jeevan also adapts her traditional designs based on student feedback, blending age-old artistry with contemporary trends.

At this year’s Gauhar Mahal exhibition, she was honored with the Innovation Award by Sushil Kumar Jain, President of the Environment Culture Conservation and Human Welfare Trust, recognizing her creativity and dedication. Yet, Jeevan expresses a heartfelt wish for a national-level award, which she believes would bring wider recognition and energy to her and the entire tribal community.

Exhibitions like these by NIFT provide a crucial platform for local artists, shining a spotlight on India’s rich tribal heritage and ensuring that centuries-old traditions continue to thrive.
