Galle, Jan 28 (UNI) Stand-in captain Steve Smith on Tuesday confirmed that Travis Head will open the batting alongside Usman Khawaja in the first Test against Sri Lanka, putting an end to speculation about Khawaja’s opening partner.
The decision, announced on the eve of the match, sees Head replacing teenage rookie Sam Konstas at the top of the order.
Smith attributed the decision to Head’s strong performances in India, where his aggressive approach against the new ball yielded quick runs. “Travis showed great intent in India, which will be crucial here as well. His ability to attack early gives us an edge,” Smith said.
The move creates a vacancy in the middle order, with the No.5 position now up for grabs. While Konstas remains in contention, Smith hinted that the youngster’s inclusion in the squad, even if not in the playing XI, will serve as valuable exposure to the international arena.
Other contenders for the No.5 spot include Nathan McSweeney, who returns to the squad as an auxiliary batsman after a difficult stint as an opener during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and uncapped keeper-batsman Josh Inglis, who could potentially make his Test debut.
“We have several options for the middle order,” Smith noted. “Josh has been performing consistently in domestic cricket, and Nathan’s recall reflects our belief in his capabilities.”
Australia are expected to finalise their playing XI at the toss on Wednesday. The Galle Test marks the beginning of a crucial series for Australia as they look to secure a strong start in Sri Lanka.
