Tragedy at Rail Track: Bear Cub Killed by Train in Sanjay Tiger Reserve

Sidhi: A tragic incident has raised serious concerns about wildlife safety in the Sanjay Tiger Reserve after a bear cub was fatally struck by a train on Tuesday morning. The year-old cub was hit by a speeding train on the Katni-Singrauli rail route between the Bhadora and Marwas railway tracks.

Second Casualty in a Week

This incident marks the second wildlife fatality on the same stretch within a week, highlighting a growing threat to animals in the region. A few days prior, an adult bear also died after being hit by a train in the same area. The repeated accidents are fueling debate over the efficacy of protection measures in the reserve.

Calls for Safer Wildlife Passage

Forest Department officials, including SDO Sudhir Gupta, confirmed that a rescue team immediately secured the cub’s body and sent it for a post-mortem examination. Local environmentalists are demanding urgent action, noting that a significant portion of the Katni-Singrauli railway line cuts directly through the Tiger Reserve’s core and buffer zones. They have called for the construction of underpasses or overbridges to ensure the safe movement of wildlife, preventing such devastating collisions in the future.
