- Required rare Bombay Blood Group at AIIMS
Bhopal: In a remarkable display of compassion, a timely blood donation at AIIMS Bhopal saved the life of a pregnant woman diagnosed with the extremely rare Bombay blood group. Admitted for delivery, the patient faced a critical situation, as finding a compatible blood donor for her condition is exceptionally challenging.
Upon hearing the emergency request, Ravindra, a selfless donor from Shirdi, traveled nearly 700 kilometers overnight to donate blood. His swift response ensured that the patient received the life-saving transfusion, allowing for a safe delivery. The transportation was arranged free of charge by Ashok Nair of the NGO ‘Blood Call Center,’ highlighting the power of community-driven support in critical medical situations.
The Bombay blood group is one of the rarest, found in only 1 in 10,000 to 1 lakh individuals in India, making donor compatibility a significant hurdle. This case emphasizes the vital role of voluntary blood donors in saving lives.
Prof. (Dr.) Ajai Singh, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhopal, praised the importance of voluntary blood donation, stating, “It has the power to save lives, especially in critical situations like this.” Dr. Romesh Jain, Associate Professor, AIIMS Bhopal, urged the creation of a national rare blood group registry to help manage such emergencies efficiently.
The patient’s family and hospital administration expressed deep gratitude to Ravindra for his extraordinary act of kindness.
