New Delhi, May 26 (UNI) Signalling a thaw in bilateral ties, which had turned cold under the regime of Justin Trudeau, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and new Canadian FM Anita Anand held a telephone call and discussed the prospects of bilateral ties.
In a post on X, the EAM posted: “Appreciate the telecon with FM @AnitaAnandMP of Canada.
“Discussed the prospects of India-Canada ties.”
He also wished her a successful tenure.
In reply, the Indo-Canadian leader thanked the EAM for the productive discussion.
“Thank you, Minister @DrSJaishankar, for today’s productive discussion on strengthening Canada-India ties, deepening our economic cooperation, and advancing our shared priorities. I look forward to continuing our collaboration.”
Anand was appointed as the Foreign Minister in the government of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, whose Liberal Party won the parliamentary polls.
She replaced Melanie Joly, who is serving as Minister of Industry.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had wished PM Carney after he took charge as the Canadian counterpart.
Ties between the two nations had gone on a downward spiral under the regime of Justin Trudeau, with the latter promoting Khalistani elements and their anti-India tirade, especially as his coalition partner NDP was then led by Jagmeet Singh, an avowed Khalistani supporter.
Ties had sunk to such a level that last year the two sides expelled several of their diplomats in a tit-for-tat move, after Ottawa accused India of being involved in the shooting death of an Indo-Canadian, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent Khalistani supporter, in British Columbia in 2023. India denied any involvement.
