TERI report revives Delhi-Haryana water dispute, says AAP

New Delhi, Jan 5 (UNI) The AAP on Monday cited a report by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) to reignite allegations that Delhi received heavily polluted water from Haryana during the party-led dispensation in the national capital.

According to AAP, the report confirms long-standing claims of dangerous ammonia levels that were previously dismissed by authorities.

AAP Delhi state president Saurabh Bharadwaj presented data from the TERI assessment, claiming it shows ammonia levels in the Yamuna river water entering Delhi reached approximately 27 to 30 parts per million (ppm) in a sample from last December.

The Delhi Jal Board’s water treatment plants are typically capable of handling ammonia concentrations only up to 1 ppm.

Bharadwaj stated that when former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal raised alarms about toxic water from Haryana before the Delhi elections, he was accused of spreading falsehoods.

The Delhi Jal Board’s then-CEO and the Lieutenant Governor’s office had publicly contradicted his statements, with the CEO noting that ammonia spikes usually only reached 6-7 ppm. An FIR was also registered against Kejriwal in Haryana at the time.

“The TERI report, now accepted by the current government, proves that the ammonia levels were far higher than what was officially stated back then,” Bharadwaj said.

He alleged that officials misled the public to shield the BJP-led Haryana government from responsibility for industrial and sewage discharge into the river.

The AAP leader linked the issue to a recent water contamination tragedy in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, suggesting that vigilant action by the previous AAP government prevented a similar crisis in Delhi. He warned that home water purifiers are ineffective against such high ammonia concentrations.
