Syrian detained for attempted murder after stabbing 2 in Berlin – Police

Damascus, Jan 1 (UNI) A Syrian man was arrested in Berlin on Tuesday morning on suspicion of attempted murder after stabbing two men with a knife in a supermarket and in the street, the German capital’s police force said.

“Initial data suggests that the suspect could be showing signs of mental illness,” Berlin police said in a statement.

The Syrian, who has permanent residence in Sweden, is suspected of having stabbed a man with a stolen knife in the supermarket in Charlottenburg neighborhood shortly before noon. He then attacked a second man outside of a nearby hotel.

One victim required hospitalization while the other was treated at the scene. The Berlin police’s murder unit took over the investigation into the stabbing.

The attack comes less than two weeks after a Saudi man rammed a car into a crowd at a Christmas market in the German city of Magdeburg, killing five people, including a nine-year-old, and injuring more than 200 others. He was arrested on murder charges.
