Successful surgery of newborn with congenital lung defect at AIIMS Bhopal

  • New life after 3 weeks of ventilator support

Bhopal: AIIMS Bhopal has achieved a significant medical milestone by successfully performing a complex surgery on a low birth weight newborn suffering from Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH)—a serious congenital defect.

The condition was diagnosed antenatally in the seventh month of pregnancy as a critical case. Following expert medical advice, the family decided to deliver the baby at the AIIMS Bhopal labour room, where a safe delivery was carried out. At birth, the baby weighed only 2.2 kilograms and faced severe respiratory distress due to the congenital anomaly.

The newborn was immediately placed on ventilator support and kept under intensive care for approximately three weeks. Subsequently, the Pediatric Surgery team at AIIMS Bhopal successfully conducted a highly complex surgical procedure. Overcoming all medical challenges, the baby made a healthy recovery and now weighs approximately 2.9 kilograms. The family expressed deep gratitude to AIIMS Bhopal for providing advanced neonatal surgical care, praising the institution for offering high-quality and completely free treatment.

On this occasion, Prof. (Dr.) Ajai Singh said, “This case is a testimony to the availability of state-of-the-art neonatal and surgical facilities at AIIMS Bhopal, which are proving to be life-saving even in highly complex congenital conditions. We take pride in delivering advanced pediatric healthcare services across Madhya Pradesh and its adjoining regions.”
