- Temps plunge across state including Bhopal
Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh is set to experience an intense cold spell starting December 20, which will extend through January. During this 40-day period, a cold wave is expected to grip the state for 20 to 22 days. The Ujjain and Gwalior-Chambal divisions are likely to face the harshest conditions due to the direct impact of cold winds from the north.
November has already witnessed record-breaking cold temperatures. In Bhopal, a 36-year-old record was shattered, while cities like Indore, Ujjain, Jabalpur, and Gwalior recorded temperatures 7°C below normal. However, meteorologists predict the most severe cold will arrive in December.
According to the Meteorological Department, December and January are historically the coldest months due to an influx of cold winds from North India. These winds cause a sharp drop in temperatures, with both day and night experiencing significant cooling.
Data from the past decade confirms this pattern, showing that the activation of Western Disturbances in December often results in “Mawtha” (winter rainfall), which further intensifies the cold even during the day.
La Niña Conditions May Develop In Early Dec
Weather scientist Dr. Singh has highlighted the role of La Niña in exacerbating the cold conditions this year. La Niña conditions are expected to develop in early December, leading to more severe cold in regions like Gwalior-Chambal and Bundelkhand. Both daytime and nighttime temperatures will drop considerably. The combination of strong Western Disturbances and cold northern winds is expected to create exceptionally cold conditions.
Several districts across the state are expected to experience extreme cold. The following areas will be most affected.
Gwalior, Chambal, and Ujjain Divisions will experience direct icy winds, making them the coldest in the state.
