Port-au-Prince, Nov 12 (UNI) A plane of the US Spirit Airlines carrier has come under fire while trying to land in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, the Miami Herald newspaper has reported, citing the company’s spokesperson and adding that one person was injured in the shooting.
Haitian gangs opened fire at the plane on Monday, forcing it to divert to the Dominican Republic, the media reported, adding that no passengers were injured, but a flight attendant received minor injuries.
“We have suspended our service at Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haïtien pending further evaluation,” a Spirit Airlines spokesperson told the newspaper.
Haiti has long been mired in a socioeconomic and political crisis that escalated after the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021. The country has also faced an unprecedented rise in criminal gang violence, such as extortion and kidnappings.
