Governor Participates in Sickle Cell Awareness Program in Dhar District
Bhopal, Governor Shri Mangubhai Patel emphasized that genetic counselling must be given special focus following screening to eliminate sickle cell disease effectively. He noted that over 1.2 million people in the Dhar district have been screened for sickle cell, and approximately 2,500 individuals have tested positive. He stressed the importance of counselling individuals with sickle cell traits to avoid intra-marriages among carriers.
Governor Patel made these remarks while attending an awareness campaign held in Dhar district as part of the ongoing sickle cell eradication campaign. During the event, attendees listened collectively to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s “Mann Ki Baat” radio address.
The Governor further stated that AYUSH medicines are now available at Jan Aushadhi Kendras. He advised those who tested positive to take medication regularly, exercise daily, eat light and digestible food, avoid cold baths, and stay well-hydrated. He emphasized the need to ensure medicine availability at all stores and to enhance public awareness through doctors.
Governor Patel appreciated the efforts made by public representatives and officials in combating sickle cell disease and thanked them for their dedication. He also praised the exhibition at the event and encouraged all attendees to visit it.
Higher Education and AYUSH Minister Shri Inder Singh Parmar informed that the Governor-led campaign is incorporating Ayurveda and Homeopathy treatments to fight sickle cell disease. He said the awareness drive would soon extend to students and reaffirmed the state’s resolution to eliminate the disease by 2047.
Union Minister of State for Tribal Affairs Shri D.D. Uikey commended the Governor’s leadership and noted his deep understanding of the pain caused by this illness, especially among tribal communities. He highlighted the campaign’s contribution to the overall development of tribal society.
Union Minister of State for Women and Child Development Smt. Savitri Thakur shared that in alignment with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision, door-to-door sickle cell screening has been conducted across Dhar district. She urged all public representatives to engage in this cause as a community service.
During the event, five children shared their experiences of being screened for sickle cell in their schools and hostels. They expressed relief after receiving free medicines from government hospitals. Individuals who made significant contributions to sickle cell screening and tuberculosis control were also honoured during the program.
