- To be solarized by December 2025
Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh is making significant strides toward achieving Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s ambitious target of producing 500 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2030. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, the state is setting new benchmarks in solar energy through the “Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme.”
A major initiative under this scheme aims to solarize all government buildings in the state by December 2025. The Madhya Pradesh Energy Development Corporation has issued district-wise tenders under the RESCO (Renewable Energy Service Company) model to implement this project. Under this system, rooftop solar plants will be installed on government buildings without any investment from government departments. Instead, they will pay a per-unit cost to RESCO developers, which will be significantly lower than the standard commercial electricity rates.
This “zero investment, savings from day one” model is designed to ensure cost-effectiveness and long-term sustainability. In Bhopal district alone, 15.6 MW capacity projects are planned, while Gwalior, Indore, Chhindwara, Datia, and Dhar districts will see projects ranging from 1.34 MW to 5.26 MW. These plants will operate under a 25-year agreement, with maintenance fully managed by RESCO units, incentivizing high energy output.
133 govt buildings solarized
Energy Minister Shri Rakesh Shukla shared that from 2018 to 2020, 133 government buildings, including prestigious institutions like IIM Indore, NLIU Bhopal, and several medical colleges, have already been successfully solarized using the RESCO model.
With the efficient rollout of the Surya Ghar scheme, Madhya Pradesh is poised to emerge as a national leader in solar energy, setting an example in sustainability and innovation for the entire country.
