Sri Lanka beat India by five wickets in 18.3 overs in the opening Twenty20 international of the tri-nation tournament on Tuesday. Chasing a target of 175, Kusal Perera, batting at number three, put Sri Lanka on track after he slammed 66 off just 37 balls.
Although Kusal received little support from the rest of the batting order, Thisara Perera was there at the end with an unbeaten 22 off 10 balls to see the home side over the line with nine balls to spare.
Washington Sundar (2-28) and Yuzvendra Chahal (2-37) took two wickets each for India while left-arm seamer Jaydev Unadkat claimed a single scalp.
The visitors, who are missing several senior players who being rested after a gruelling tour to South Africa, got off a poor start after being put in to bat by home captain Dinesh Chandimal.
India’s stand-in skipper Rohit Sharma was out in the first over for a duck while Suresh Raina (1) did not add much more to the total as the tourists found themselves 9/2 in the second over.
