Colombo, Oct 14 (UNI) The 15th match of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 between Sri Lanka Women and New Zealand Women at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo ended with no result due to rain.
The hosts, after winning the toss and electing to bat, posted 258 for 6 in their allotted 50 overs.
Chamari Athapaththu top-scored with 53 off 72 balls, while Vishmi Gunaratne contributed 42 runs. Harshitha Samarawickrama made a brisk 26, and Nilakshi de Silva remained unbeaten on 55.
Despite contributions from the middle order, the match could not proceed further owing to persistent rain.
Both the teams shared points, with Sri Lanka moving to two points and New Zealand to three. Both skippers shook hands in a truce. This is the second no-result of the tournament, and both have occurred in Colombo. The groundsmen tried to cover the field, but two bouts of rain prevented any further play.
Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu said, “We assessed the conditions and played good cricket. Unfortunately, we couldn’t complete the game. It’s not in our hands. Vishmi has returned to the top of the order, and Nilakshi has been consistent over the last 12 months. We missed another 20-25 runs, and I had told the bowlers to attack the stumps before the rain. The next game is important, and we hope to play it without interruptions.”
New Zealand captain Sophie Devine praised the Sri Lankan batting effort, saying, “Sri Lanka batted particularly well. If you have wickets in hand at the back end, you can exploit the field. We managed to pick them back a little after the powerplay, but the weather didn’t allow a full contest. It would have been an exciting chase, but it’s cricket—some days stats and planning can’t overcome conditions. Today, it was about adjusting and learning. Hopefully, we can have a full game in the next match against Pakistan, which will be challenging given their talent.”
Bree Illing (2/39) and Devine (3/54) were the pick of the bowlers for New Zealand, while Rosemary Mair also chipped in with crucial breakthrough.
