Six arrested in Meghalaya ATM heist case

Shillong, (UNI) Meghalaya police have arrested six people, including two kingpins from Haryana, in connection with a series of ATM heists, where nearly Rs. one crore was stolen, a police official said on Friday.
The ATM heist occurred at three locations in Mawkriah village, Smit village and Mylliem village under East Khasi Hills district between May 2025 and February 2026, Vivek Syiem, the district police chief of East Khasi Hills, said.
He said the first ATM robbery occurred on May 21, 2025, when miscreants broke into an ATM booth at Mawkriah village, and took away Rs 28.13 lakh in cash.
Subsequently on December 30, 2025, another ATM booth at Smit village was targeted and cash Rs. 35.57 lakh was stolen, the police official said.
In a similar incident on February 8, , an ATM booth at Mylliem was robbed, and around Rs. 35 lakh was stolen, Syiem said.
Following the registration of these cases, Syiem said, a seven-member team of the Special Cell, East Khasi Hills under Deputy Superintendent of Police (Operation) Simseng Sangma, was sent to Haryana’s Nuh district on February 27, last to look out and arrest the accused.
The Special Cell of Meghalaya police with the help of the Central Investigation Agency (CIA) of Nuh district nabbed Salim (26) and Rahul Khan (31 ) from Nuh City and Pingwan on March 10, the police official said.
The Meghalaya police team came under attack from a mob of around 30 people in Haryana’s Nuh district . The attackers attempted to free an inter-state ATM robbery accused Rahul Khan from their custody.
Salim and Khan were produced before a local court and remanded to five days’ police custody.
Police also arrested two local facilitators – John Fishal Lyngkhoi (32) and Joyous Dura (47) – from Shillong in connection with the series of ATM robberies in the State, Syiem said.
Six-day police remand has been given to Lyngkhoi and Dura, former personnel in the Special Operation Team (SOT) of the Meghalaya Police.
Syiem said two more accused – Rejaul Korim (38) and Lius Ali (28) – were arrested by the Special Cell team from two different locations in Assam on Thursday in connection with the ATM theft.
Incriminating items have been seized from the possession of all accused, the police official said, adding that further investigation is ongoing to nab others who are absconding. UNI RRK SSP
