London, (UNI) Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner created history today, defeating defending champion Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in a gripping final to clinch his maiden Grand Slam title on grass at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships.
Sinner produced a masterclass of composed and strategic tennis to outlast Alcaraz, who entered the final on a 24-match unbeaten streak and an unblemished 18-0 Wimbledon record since 2022. But the Spaniard’s run came to an end on Centre Court, as Sinner broke new ground for Italian tennis.
Alcaraz, who had won the first set 6-4 with dynamic court coverage and a mix of aggressive play, looked poised to continue his dominance. However, Sinner clawed back with poise, levelling the match with a 6-4 win in the second set, marked by relentless baseline rallies and clinical serving despite nursing a heavily strapped right arm.
In the third set, both players held serve tightly until Sinner broke at 5-4, capturing the set and momentum with it. The final set saw early pressure from Alcaraz, but Sinner’s tactical brilliance and nerve held firm. A key break in the fourth set gave the Italian a 2-1 lead, and he never looked back, fending off late resistance to seal the match on his second championship point.
This win marks Sinner’s first major title and a monumental step in his burgeoning career. He is the first Italian man to win Wimbledon and the second Italian Grand Slam champion in the Open Era after Adriano Panatta (1976 French Open).
The match lasted three hours and twenty-two minutes and was watched by packed spectators that included two-time Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra.
With this victory, Sinner is expected to climb to the No. 1 spot in the ATP Rankings, overtaking Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, who missed this year’s tournament due to injury.
Sinner’s win also snaps Alcaraz’s 18-match unbeaten streak at the All England Club and his hopes of securing a third consecutive Wimbledon crown.
