New Delhi, Sep 2 (UNI) Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong will be on a three-day official visit to India from September 2, as the two nations celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations.
His visit to New Delhi, at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is his first to India in his capacity as Singapore’s Prime Minister. He will be accompanied by his spouse and a high-level delegation including Cabinet Ministers and Senior Officials.
During the visit, Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Wong are scheduled to hold bilateral discussions on September 4, and PM Modi will host a banquet lunch for him. Prime Minister Wong will call on President Droupadi Murmu.
PM Wong, who is also Finance Minister, will receive calls by Minister of Health and Family Welfare Jagat Prakash Nadda, who is also Minister of Chemicals and Fertilisers; Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman; Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan; External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar; and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.
“Singapore is an important partner for India, including in our ‘Act East’ Policy. During the visit of Prime Minister Modi to Singapore in September 2024, bilateral ties were elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,” a statement said.
“The forthcoming visit of Prime Minister Wong, which coincides with the 60th anniversary of India-Singapore diplomatic relations, reaffirms the continued commitment of both countries to further strengthen this partnership. The visit will provide an opportunity for both Prime Ministers to review our robust and multifaceted cooperation and to set the path for future collaboration. The two Prime
Ministers will also engage on regional and international issues of mutual interest,” it added.
The decision to elevate ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership will help deepen existing areas of cooperation such as sustainability, advanced manufacturing and connectivity, while enabling new ones such as cross-border data flows and electricity trade, and a joint flagship programme for skills training.
Last month, during the third India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable held in New Delhi, the two sides had discussed potential collaborations regarding sustainability, digitalisation, skills development, healthcare and medicine, advanced manufacturing and connectivity. There was also interest from local and multinational companies operating in Singapore to set up a semiconductor ecosystem between the two nations.
The Ministers accompanying the Singapore PM would be Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow, Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Trade and Industry Gan Siow Huang, as well as senior officials.
The Singapore PM will meet overseas Singaporeans and also participate in a closed-door roundtable with Indian business leaders.
