Singapore, May 27 (UNI) Former world champion P V Sindhu snapped her run of first-round exits with a commanding victory to enter the pre-quarterfinals of the Singapore Badminton Open 2025 women’s singles event here on Tuesday.
Sindhu, currently ranked 17th in the world, ousted Canada’s world No 52 Wen Yu Zhang 21-14, 21-9 in just 31 minutes in her round of 32 clash. The Indian ace had also prevailed over Zhang in their previous meeting at the Spain Masters last year, winning that encounter in straight games as well.
The 2022 Singapore Open champion, Sindhu arrived in the island nation following four consecutive opening-round defeats in the ongoing BWF World Tour season. Her best result this year had come at the India Open in January, where she reached the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, Malvika Bansod and Anmol Kharb bowed out in contrasting fashion. Malvika put up a spirited fight against Thailand’s world No 9 Supanida Katethong before going down 14-21, 21-18, 21-11. Anmol Kharb, facing Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medallist Chen Yufei of China, showed resilience but fell short 21-11, 24-22.
In the men’s singles, H S Prannoy staged a brilliant comeback to defeat Denmark’s Rasmus Gemke 21-19, 16-21, 21-14 in a gruelling encounter that lasted one hour and 12 minutes. The world No 34 Indian showcased his trademark grit to progress to the next round.
However, Priyanshu Rajawat, despite a strong start, lost to Japan’s 2023 World Championships silver medallist Kodai Naraoka 14-21, 21-10, 21-14.
In mixed doubles action, Paris 2024-bound Tanisha Crasto and her partner Dhruv Kapila were ousted by China’s Cheng Xing and Zhang Chi in straight games, 21-18, 21-13.
