New Delhi, Mar 3 (UNI) Congress National spokesperson Shama Mohamed on Monday sparked massive controversy by calling Indian skipper Rohit Sharma ‘fat’ in a social media post.
Coming under fire for her post on ‘X’ and public outrage against her remarks, Mohamed deleted the post but maintained that her remarks were ‘generic’ and not aimed at questioning the fitness of the cricketer.
“Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman! Need to lose weight! And of course the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had!,” she has said in a post on her social media handle X, which she deleted later.
“What is so world class about him when compared to his predecessors like Ganguly, Tendulkar, Dravid, Dhoni, Kohli, Kapil Dev, Shastri and the rest! He is a mediocre captain as well as a mediocre player who got lucky to be the Captain of India,” she had said.
Meanwhile, her party in a damage control, distanced itself from her remarks stating that her comments “do not reflect the party’s position”.
The party had also directed her to delete the tweets and advised to exercise greater caution in the future.
Her remarks had not gone down well with Rohit Sharma’s fans and cricket enthusiasts, leading to backlash from them.
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Ponawalla slammed the Congress saying, “Those who have lost 90 elections under captaincy of Rahul Gandhi are calling captaincy of Rohit Sharma unimpressive!”
“I guess 6 ducks in Delhi and 90 election losses is impressive but winning T20 World Cup isn’t! Rohit has a brilliant track record as captain by the way!,” he said.
Moreover, the Congress’ INDI alliance partner Shiv Sena UBT too disapproved the comment of Shama Mohamed.
Priyanka Chaturvedi in a post on X said, “Not an avid cricket fan however even with my limited interest in the game, I can say that Rohit Sharma – with extra pounds of weight or without it, has led India team to great heights. It is his work and commitment to it that matters. Win the trophy, Champion!”.
