SF hopes of India ride on Australia match

Sharjah, Oct 12 (UNI) India’s chances of advancing to the semifinals of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 hang in the balance as they prepare for a crucial Group A clash against Australia at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Sunday. This match could be crucial in deciding which two teams will progress.

After a shaky start marked by a 58-run loss to New Zealand, India improved their Net Run Rate (NRR) from -2.9 to +0.57, following a six-wicket victory over Pakistan and an emphatic 82-run win against Sri Lanka.

A victory against Australia would propel India to six points, significantly enhancing their chances of securing a semifinal berth. Even a narrow loss might not be disastrous, provided they keep the damage to their NRR minimal. If New Zealand falters in at least one of their remaining matches, India could qualify purely on points.

The competition in Group A is fierce, with Australia currently leading the group with a strong NRR of +2.78. New Zealand, sitting on an NRR of -0.05, can still challenge India for the second spot by winning their last two matches against Pakistan and Sri Lanka by a margin that exceeds India’s potential victory margin over Australia.

Sri Lanka is already out of contention after three losses, leaving India, Australia, New Zealand, and Pakistan vying for the remaining semifinal spots. Pakistan, with an NRR of -0.48, has slim prospects of advancement. Even if they win their upcoming matches, their maximum points total would only reach four.

As the group stage approaches its conclusion, every run and wicket will be vital in determining which teams advance to the next stage of the tournament.
