Serena Williams will make her return to the Australian Open for the first time since winning in 2017, organisers confirmed on Wednesday.
After her return last year, Williams reached the Wimbledon and US Open finals but lost both, leaving her one short of Australian Margaret Court’s tally of grand slam singles titles.
Her final match last season was the final at Flushing Meadow, where her loss to Naomi Osaka was very much highlighted because of her row with umpire Carlos Ramos.
The current world No 259 will also play an exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi as a warm-up ,in the final week of the year before heading to Australia.
The five-times runner up Andy Murray, who missed three of the four majors last year because of a hip injury will be also be a major contender of the title.
