Mumbai, Jun 23 (UNI) BSE Sensex on Monday slumped by 511.38 points to close at 81,896.39, tracking negative cues from global peers on concerns over the ongoing tension in the Middle East region.
Traders said that investor sentiment remained cautious amid escalating geopolitical tensions following U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
National Stock Exchange (NSE) too declined by 140.50 points to settle at 24,971.90.
The Sensex opened lower at 81,704.07 against its previous close of 82,408.17. Sensex registered intra-day low of 81,476.76 and a high of 82, 169.67 respectively.
The Nifty registered the day’s high at 25,057.00 and low of 24,824.85 points.
The broader market outperformed the frontline indices. BSE Mid-Cap index rose 0,20 pc and BSE Small-Cap index added 0.57 pc.
The market breadth was weak. On the BSE 1,856 shares rose while 2,200 fell. At the same time 184 shares were unchanged.
Among Sectoral Indices, BSE IT was the top loser, down by 1.4 pc, other losers were Teck by 1.10 pc, FMCG by 0.62 pc, Financial by 0.15 pc, Health care by 0.15 pc, Industrial by 0.13 pc, Telecom by 0.50 pc, Auto by 0.88 pc, Bankex by 0.38 pc, Power by 0.17 pc and Realty by 0.19 pc.
Sectoral Gainer were Commodities by 0.46 pc, Energy by 0.24 pc, Utilities by 0.21 pc, Capital Goods by 0.94 pc, Consumer Durables by 0.38 pc, Metals by 0.71pc and Oil& gas by 0.30 pc. Among 30 scrips, nine advanced while 21 declined.
Top five Losers were Infosys by 2.29 pc to Rs 1,584.70, LT by 2.11pc to Rs 3,583.30, HCL Tech by 2.10 pc 1,703.25, M&M by 1.59 pc to Rs 3.131.75 and HUL By 1.29 pc to Rs 2,275.10
Top Gainer were Trent by 3.61 pc to Rs 6,120.45, BEL by 3.15 pc to Rs 420.90, Bajaj Finance by 1.20 pc to Rs 915.50, Kotrak Bank by 0.71 pc to Rs 2,184.90 and Bajaj finsv by 0.58 pc to Rs 1,994.95.
European markets traded lower CAC by 0.33 pc and DAX by 0.28 pc.
Asian markets ended lower on Monday Nikkei closed at 225 down by 0.13 pc, Straits Tines went down by 9.11 pc and Kospi by 0.24 pc as investor jitters grew following the US airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites, which pushed oil prices higher and reignited fears of a wider Middle East conflict.
Back in the US, two of the three major indices closed lower on Friday. The S&P 500 slipped by 0.22 per centage, marking its third straight loss, while the Nasdaq dropped 0.51 pc. The Dow managed a modest gain of 0.08 pc as investors weighed geopolitical developments
