Semi-High-Speed Train to Connect Howrah and Guwahati, Boosting Rail Travel Across Assam and West Bengal

New Delhi. Indian Railways is set to introduce a modern semi-high-speed train vandebharat sleeper service between Howrah and Guwahati (Kamakhya), offering faster, safer and more comfortable travel for passengers across eastern and north-eastern India. The new service is expected to significantly benefit several districts in Assam and West Bengal by improving connectivity and reducing journey time.

In Assam, the train will serve Kamrup Metropolitan and Bongaigaon districts, while in West Bengal it will benefit Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Maldah, Murshidabad, Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly and Howrah districts.

The train will consist of a total of 16 coaches, including 11 Third AC, 4 Second AC and 1 First AC coach. It will have an overall passenger capacity of 823, accommodating 611 passengers in Third AC, 188 in Second AC and 24 in First AC.

Designed as a semi-high-speed train, it will have a maximum design speed of up to 180 kmph. Passenger comfort has been prioritised with ergonomically designed berths featuring improved cushioning, automatic doors with vestibules for smooth inter-coach movement, and enhanced ride comfort through superior suspension and reduced noise levels.

Safety and hygiene have also been given special attention. The train will be equipped with the Kavach safety system, an emergency talk-back facility, and advanced disinfectant technology to maintain high standards of sanitation. The driver’s cab will feature advanced controls and modern safety systems, ensuring reliable and secure operations.

With its aerodynamic exterior design and automatic external passenger doors, this state-of-the-art train is expected to mark a significant step forward in modernising rail travel between Howrah and Guwahati, strengthening regional connectivity and enhancing the overall passenger experience.
