Security beefed up for second phase of Bihar polls : DGP

Patna, Nov 10 (UNI) The Bihar government has made elaborate security arrangements for conducting free and fair polling in the second phase of elections in 122 assembly constituencies due tomorrow.

Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar told media here today that security has been tightened in the state and its bordering areas to ensure fearless voting.

Kumar said the police force will crack down on miscreants and those who spread violence. He said 1,650 companies of security forces have been deployed.

Apart from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), about 45,000 personnel of the district police force and a team of home guards will be deployed to man the election booths.

The DGP said patrolling has been intensified and the Static Surveillance Team (SST) was patrolling in various areas.

He said the international border along Bihar was sealed 72 hours ahead of the polling while every passerby was being frisked at the the inter-state border sealed 48 hours ahead of the polling.

Special arrangements have been made at bordering areas such as Kishanganj and Purnia in the areas adjoining West Bengal.

He said neighbouring states have also appointed nodal officers under their jurisdiction to remain in constant touch with their Bihar counterparts. A certain level of coordination and communication has been established with Nepal on the international border. District magistrates are in touch with their counterpart in Nepal.

He said surveillance teams at the border will keep an eye on the movement of illegal substances, cash, liquor, drugs and arms.

He said additional police force has been deployed in Naxal-affected areas where there is a possibility of violence. Special bomb disposal squads have also been set up in districts affected by Naxalism, especially in the adjoining areas of Jharkhand.
