SC to hear plea on Nov 25 seeking removal of AI-generated communal video posted by BJP Assam unit

New Delhi, Oct 31 (UNI) The Supreme Court today said it will hear on November 25 a plea seeking the removal of an AI-generated video posted on social media platform X by the BJP’s Assam unit.

The video allegedly promotes a communal narrative suggesting a “Muslim takeover” of the State if the party were to lose elections.

The matter was mentioned before a Bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta by Advocate Nizam Pasha, who sought urgent listing, noting that the Court had earlier issued notice in the case, but it had not been listed since.

“Assam video matter… it didn’t come… please list. Notice was issued,” Pasha submitted. Taking note of the plea, the Bench directed that the matter be taken up on November 25.

On October 7, the apex court issued notice on the petition which seeks immediate removal of the controversial AI-generated video circulated by the BJP Assam unit ahead of the upcoming elections.

According to the petition, the video posted on September 15 shows visibly Muslim individuals taking control of prominent Assam landmarks such as tea estates, Guwahati airport, Rang Ghar and government lands.

It alleges that the video was created to instil fear and communal apprehension among voters.

Filed through Advocate-on-Record Lzafeer Ahmad BF, the petition argues that the video “vilifies Muslims, spreads communal discord and undermines the secular values enshrined in the Constitution.”

The plea further notes that the video, shared on the official handle “BJP Assam Pradesh,” has garnered over 4.6 million views, 19,000 likes, and 6,100 reposts as of September 18, 2025.

“The same is required to be taken down immediately to contain any further spread of communal disharmony, unrest and enmity,” the petition states.

The petitioners contend that as the ruling party, the BJP is constitutionally bound to uphold secularism and cannot disseminate divisive or discriminatory content.

“The video openly targets, vilifies and demonises Muslims, conveying that a Muslim-led takeover would be the worst fate for the State, while implying that electing the BJP would prevent such an outcome,” the plea asserts.

It adds that an elected government under the Constitution serves as a guardian for all communities and is prohibited from engaging in discrimination on religious or communal lines. Even private citizens, the plea points out, are barred under law from making speeches or sharing material that fosters communal disharmony.

The petition seeks directions to X India Pvt. Ltd. and the BJP Assam Pradesh to immediately remove the video and urges the Court to initiate penal action against those responsible for creating and circulating the AI-generated content.
