New Delhi, Sept 1 (UNI) The Supreme Court today issued notice on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking directions to the union government and states to introduce transgender-inclusive Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) in school curricula across India.
A bench comprising Chief Justice of India BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran was hearing the plea, which argued that inclusive CSE is essential to foster awareness, equality, and protection of rights for transgender students nationwide.
The petition points out that despite the landmark 2014 NALSA judgment recognizing the rights of transgender persons and the enactment of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, school curricula remain largely silent on issues of gender diversity and sexual orientation.
It contends that incorporating scientifically accurate and inclusive CSE would not only safeguard the dignity of transgender children but also play a vital role in countering bullying, stigma, and misinformation in schools.
The court has now sought responses from the Centre and states on the matter, which carries significant implications for education policy and the protection of rights of transgender students across the country.
