Bhopal: In a landmark ruling today, the Supreme Court put a stay on the implementation of the contentious provisions of the Wakf Amendment Bill, 2024. The court observed that the matter is closely linked to fundamental rights, religious freedom and social justice, and therefore requires deeper constitutional scrutiny.
Madhya Pradesh Congress spokesperson Shaharyar Khan welcomed the judgment, stating that the Bill, if enforced, could adversely affect the religious and social rights of millions, particularly those belonging to minority communities. He added that the court had rightly directed that the case be placed before a Constitution Bench for detailed consideration. Until the next hearing, no fresh action under the Bill will be permitted.
The Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee hailed the verdict, calling it a reaffirmation of the judiciary’s role in protecting the constitutional values of equality, justice and freedom of religion. “The spirit of democracy lies in ensuring that no community faces injustice, and this order strengthens that principle,” Khan said.
The party further expressed its commitment to safeguarding constitutional values, democratic traditions and social harmony, affirming that it will continue to stand by citizens in the fight for their fundamental rights.
