“Sambhavna” event showcases vibrant folk and martial arts at Tribal Museum

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Tribal Museum’s “Sambhavna” event featured a vibrant showcase of traditional arts on August 24, 2025. The evening highlighted two distinct performances: the Matki dance and a Bundelkhandi martial arts display.

The Matki dance, a traditional folk form from the Malwa region, was presented by Soni Malviya and her troupe. Performed by village women in traditional Malvi attire with veiled faces, the dance is set to the unique rhythm of the dhol drum. Beginning with a solo dancer, known as a jhela, the performance evolves into a group dance, celebrated for its intricate footwork and graceful arm movements.

Following this, Vijay Prajapati and his group from Sagar showcased a martial arts performance. Rooted in the ancient Akhara tradition of the Bundelkhand region, this art form is a testament to courage and valor. Historically, it trained warriors in the use of weapons like swords, shields, and spears. Today, it is primarily performed during the Navratri festival, with artists displaying their skill and bravery to the beat of the dhol.

The “Sambhavna” series, held every Sunday at 2 PM, aims to present the diverse art forms of Madhya Pradesh and other parts of India to the public.
