Samajwadi Party MLA Sudhakar Singh passes away at 67

Lucknow, Nov 20 (UNI) Sudhakar Singh, the Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA from Ghosi in Mau district, passed away on Thursday morning at the age of 67, leaving a significant void in the region’s political landscape.

Singh’s health reportedly worsened after returning from a reception in Delhi for Mukhtar Ansari’s younger son, Umar Ansari, on November 17. He was admitted to Medanta Hospital in Lucknow on Tuesday and succumbed to his illness on Thursday morning.

A native of Ghosi, Sudhakar Singh was a prominent local leader and a key figure in the district. He had defeated Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) cabinet minister Dara Singh Chauhan in the most recent by-election.

Singh had initially been considered a strong contender for the SP ticket from Ghosi in the 2022 assembly elections. Although he received the party ticket, it was withdrawn at the last moment, and Dara Singh Chauhan, who had recently left the BJP, was nominated instead.

While the SP retained the seat, Chauhan’s defection triggered a by-election in 2023, where Sudhakar Singh emerged victorious.

He had also contested the Ghosi Assembly seat in 2017, narrowly losing by fewer than 2,000 votes.
