New Delhi, Aug 4 (UNI) Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), an Indian public sector steel manufacturing company, played a foundational role in naval indigenization by supplying special DMR grade steel plates and special grade plates to INS Ajay and INS Nistar respectively.
‘Special DMR grade steel plates’ refers to one particular type of high-strength, low-alloy (HSLA) steel and ‘Special grade plates’ is a broader term comprising various steel plates.
This move has shown the Maharatna’s commitment towards the goal of Defence Indigenization, which is the process of developing and manufacturing defense equipment within the country.
INS Ajay, which was launched by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), is the eighth and final vessel in the category of indigenously built Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), and INS Nistar, which was commissioned by Hindustan Shipyard Limited in July 2025 is India’s first indigenously designed and built Diving Support Vessel (DSV).
The SAIL’s contribution of critical-grade steel showed its commitment towards the goal of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ as behind every tonne of steel SAIL continues to bolster India’s maritime readiness and defense indigenization.
