SA Women beat NZ in ICC World Cup

Indore, Oct 6 (UNI) South Africa Women defeated New Zealand Women by six wickets with 9.1 overs to spare in the 7th match of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 at Holkar Cricket Stadium here today.

New Zealand, winning the toss and electing to bat, were restricted to 231 all out in 47.5 overs.

Amelia Kerr (2/62), Lea Tahuhu (1/27), and Jess Kerr (1/41) claimed wickets, while key contributions in the lower order, including a fighting 85 from Sophie Devine, kept New Zealand competitive.

South Africa’s bowlers struck regularly in the final overs, with Ayabonga Khaka, Masabata Klaas, and Nadine de Klerk effecting run-outs and crucial catches, reducing New Zealand to 231/10.

Chasing the target, South Africa staged a commanding run chase. Tazmin Brits led the charge with 101 off 89 balls, her innings featuring 15 fours and a six, while Sune Luus remained unbeaten at 83. The pair shared a 150-run partnership, dominating the Kiwi attack and ensuring the team stayed ahead throughout. Marizanne Kapp (14) and Sinalo Jafta (6 not out ) provided timely support.

The chase featured a flurry of boundaries and two sixes. Key moments included Luus hitting the winning runs off Eden Carson with a loft over covers, sparking jubilant celebrations in the dugout. Earlier, South Africa applied pressure with strategic bowling changes, with Mlaba, de Klerk, and Khaka combining to effect run-outs and catches that broke New Zealand’s partnerships in the death overs.

Amelia Kerr and Sophie Devine fought hard for New Zealand, but South Africa’s aggressive strokeplay and excellent running between the wickets ensured a comfortable victory. Extras contributed 16 runs, including 13 wides.

Umpires were Sarah Dambanevana and Shathira Jakir, with Sue Redfern as the third umpire and Michell Pereira as match referee.

With this win, South Africa Women are placed fifth on points table, while New Zealand Women are at seventh.
