Rs 7-cr Thailand-origin Hydroponic Weed seized in DRI raid

Kochi, Dec 8 (UNI) In a major strike against narcotics trafficking, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Cochin Zonal Unit, has dismantled an inter-state drug syndicate and seized hydroponic weed worth nearly ₹7 crore during a coordinated, multi-location operation.
Based on precise intelligence, DRI teams executed simultaneous interceptions at Delhi Airport, Cochin Airport, and multiple locations across Kochi.
Two passengers—one each at the two airports—were detained, leading to the recovery of 7 kg of premium-grade hydroponic cannabis reportedly sourced from Thailand.
Officials said the contraband is valued at around ₹7 crore in the international illicit market.
Following the airport interceptions, the DRI intensified searches in Kochi.
A key organiser of the network and a coordinator, both from Kerala, along with an associate from Delhi, were taken into custody.
Raids at their premises resulted in the seizure of ₹34.8 lakh in unaccounted cash, suspected to be proceeds of past drug consignments.
A total of five individuals have been arrested so far. Preliminary investigations indicate that the group had been involved in smuggling narcotic substances into India for a considerable period, using well-established channels and interstate links.
Officials said the probe will now focus on tracking the wider network, including financiers, suppliers, and distribution routes.
The operation marks yet another significant seizure by the Cochin Zonal Unit this financial year. DRI officers have confiscated narcotics and psychotropic substances—including hydroponic weed, methamphetamine, and cocaine—worth ₹47 crore from Kerala alone, with ten arrests recorded in these cases.
Authorities said the sustained enforcement action underscores the DRI’s commitment to supporting the Government of India’s “Nasha Mukt Bharat” (Drug-Free India) mission through intensified surveillance, intelligence-driven targeting, and coordinated nationwide operations.
