New Delhi, Oct 17 (UNI) Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi on Thursday said that he respects the Supreme Court decision upholding the Constitutional validity of Section 6 A of the Citizenship Act, introduced after the Assam Accord in 1985.
On social media handle X, Gogoi said that the Assam Accord was historic which brought peace in the state after years of political litigation.
“I respect the decision of the Hon’ble Supreme Court to back the Assam Accord. The Assam Accord was historic accord which brought peace to the state after years of political agitation. During that period the Prime Minister of India late Rajiv Gandhi would engage with the student leaders despite political differences,” he said.
The Congress leader further said, “Today the scenario is different. BJP calls protestors anti-nationals and Khalistanis. Or like Manipur, PM Modi pretends as if the state doesn’t exist.”
Earlier, The Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court upheld the Constitutional validity of Section 6 A of the Citizenship Act of 1955, introduced after the Assam Accord in 1985, which barred Indian citizenship to Bangladeshi immigrants who entered India before March 1971.
