Bhopal: An illegal liquor shop-cum-bar operating on a residential plot in Bhopal’s posh Arera Colony has sparked outrage among residents. Despite repeated complaints to the district administration, no action was taken by the Excise Department. Frustrated residents approached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), which on 28 July took cognisance under Section 12 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, directing the state government to investigate and submit an Action Taken Report within 15 days.
However, even after reminders, no report was filed. The Commission then issued conditional summons to the Excise Commissioner and District Magistrate, ordering them to appear personally in Delhi on 3 October with the required report. Following this, the Excise Department hurriedly recorded residents’ statements.
Congress spokesperson Vivek Tripathi accused the government of colluding with liquor mafias, while residents warned of protests if the shop is not shut immediately.
