A Red Alert was sounded at the Chennai Airport in view of a bomb threat early on Friday. Airport sources heightened security arrangements were put in place following an alert from New Delhi airport police control of an explosion in the airport.
In its warning, the New Delhi airport police Control room said it received a call that a woman passenger boarding a flight from Chennai to Saudi Arabia was carrying an explosive substance.
Following this an emergency meeting was held to review the
security arrangements at the Chennai Airport in which senior
officials from various agencies, including the Airports Authority
of India, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, intelligence agencies and others, reports said.
Passengers with valid tickets alone were allowed entry after thorough frisking and entry of visitors were also banned.
Intense checks were also being carried out at the parking lot of the airport. Already security has been beefed up in the airport ahead of
the Independence Day celebrations and following an alert issued by the Union Home Ministry following abrogation of Article 370 providing special status to Jammu and Kashmir.
