Rape survivor dies months after suicide attempt

  • Body exhumed for post-mortem

Bhopal: An 18-year-old girl from Bhopal’s Aishbag area, who had filed a rape case earlier this year, died on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday. The case came to light after the police revealed on Monday that the deceased had been a rape survivor and had earlier attempted suicide.

According to the police, the girl had lodged a complaint in February 2025 against a man named Ayan, who allegedly exploited her for two years under the false promise of marriage. After she turned 18 and pressed him to marry her, Ayan reportedly refused, leading to disputes. Following this, the victim consumed toilet cleaner in an attempt to end her life. Though she survived after prolonged treatment, her health continued to deteriorate.

Family buried her without informing the police

Shockingly, after her death, the family buried her without informing the police. Acting on court orders, the Aishbag police exhumed the body on Sunday evening and sent it for post-mortem. Aishbag police station in-charge VBS Sengar stated that the exact cause of death would be confirmed after the report.

The investigating officer, Janardan Mishra, said that the body has been kept at the Hamidia Hospital mortuary and the post-mortem would be conducted on Monday.

Ayan was arrested after the girl’s statement in the hospital, and a case was registered under relevant sections of rape, physical exploitation, and the POCSO Act. He remains in jail while the investigation continues.
