Rajnath criticises Pakistan’s appointment as Vice-Chair of UNSC’s Counter-Terrorism Committee

New Delhi, July 29 (UNI) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh today strongly condemned the United Nations Security Council’s decision to appoint Pakistan as the Vice-Chair of its Counter-Terrorism Committee, comparing it to “giving the custody of milk to a cat.”

Singh also questioned the legitimacy of providing global financial aid to Pakistan, stating that a large portion of any economic assistance received by Pakistan from abroad is spent on “terror factories” within its territory.

He made these remarks while initiating a detailed 16-hour discussion in the Rajya Sabha on Operation Sindoor, a military campaign launched by Indian armed forces against Pakistan-backed terrorist organisations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack.

Highlighting the world’s attention on how Pakistan provides shelter to Osama bin Laden and several terrorist leaders active in various countries, Singh pointed out that the committee was formed after the 9/11 (New York terrorist attacks) incident. Therefore, “appointing a country like Pakistan as the Vice-Chair of this committee is nothing short of a cruel joke.”

He emphasised that peace and progress in the world can only be achieved after eradicating terrorism, while “terrorism in Pakistan has become a business, with many parasites feeding off it, preventing the country from moving on the path of progress.”

The Defence Minister said that it is essential to eliminate terrorism at its root globally, and for that, wiping out terrorism from Pakistan is crucial. He added, “If Pakistan cannot fight terrorism, then India can help it.” He also remarked that India and Pakistan started their journey together after independence. Today, India is called the ‘Mother of Democracy,’ whereas Pakistan is labeled the ‘Father of Terrorism.’

Singh described Operation Sindoor as a clear message from India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to the world that terrorism will not be tolerated even in the slightest.

He stated that Operation Sindoor is not over. It was paused on May 10 at the request of Pakistan’s Director General Military Operations (DGMO), but after making it clear that India will no longer tolerate terrorist attacks.

Singh added that India is becoming self-reliant in the defence manufacturing sector. Defence exports reached about Rs24,000 crore in 2024-25 and the goal is to increase this to Rs 50,000 crore by 2028-29.

Finally, he called India’s social and political unity the country’s greatest strength and urged the opposition to join the government in safeguarding the nation’s unity, sovereignty and honour.
