Navi Mumbai, Nov 2 (UNI) The start of the Women’s World Cup 2025 final between India and South Africa at the DY Patil Stadium was delayed today as heavy rain swept across Navi Mumbai.
The toss, originally scheduled to take place 15 minutes ago, has been postponed, with additional covers being brought onto the field. Officials said the toss will take place once the rain stops.
The grand finale promises to be a historic occasion as the tournament is set to crown a new champion. This marks South Africa’s maiden appearance in a Women’s World Cup final, while India are contesting their third, having fallen short in 2005 and 2017.
Both sides reached the final on the back of emphatic semifinal wins. India scripted a record chase of 338 against Australia, while South Africa powered past England with a thumping 125-run victory to secure their first-ever berth in an ODI World Cup final.
India’s campaign has been defined by its dominant batting lineup, led by Smriti Mandhana’s consistency at the top.
Jemimah Rodrigues and captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s aggressive strokeplay, particularly in the semifinal, has reinforced the team’s confidence.
Richa Ghosh and Deepti Sharma have provided crucial middle-order stability, ensuring India bat deep into the innings.
On the bowling front, Renuka Singh Thakur remains India’s spearhead with the new ball, ably supported by Kranti Gaud and Amanjot Kaur. Spinners Deepti Sharma and Shree Charani have been instrumental in maintaining control during the middle overs.
For South Africa, the occasion represents the culmination of years of steady progress in women’s cricket, led by the likes of Laura Wolvaardt, Marizanne Kapp and Ayabonga Khaka.
As fans wait anxiously for the rain to clear, both teams are set for a clash that could redefine women’s cricket history.
