New Delhi, Dec 23 (UNI) Days after seven elephants were killed after colliding with Sairang-New Delhi Rajdhani Express causing derailment of five coaches in Assam’s Hojai, the Indian Railways has deployed Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled Intrusion Detection System (IDS) using Distributed Acoustic System (DAS) for detecting presence of elephants on tracks.
In a statement, the Railway Ministry stated that the AI-enabled Intrusion Detection System has been implemented in 141 RKm section on Northeast Frontier Railway to prevent elephant collisions.
The system has been successfully functioning, and based on its performance, further tenders have been awarded for 981 RKm for implementation across Indian Railways. With this, the total coverage will extend to 1,122 RKm.
Detailing about how the system works, the ministry stated that it generates real-time alerts for loco pilots, station masters and Control Rooms about the movement of elephants in proximity of railway tracks, enabling timely preventive action. Further, AI-based cameras to alert loco pilots 0.5 km in advance.
