Rahul slams govt over overcrowded trains, calls for dignified travel festivals

New Delhi, Oct 25 (UNI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today sharply criticized the government’s failure to manage rail travel during the festive season, drawing attention to the harrowing conditions faced by millions traveling home to Bihar for Diwali, Bhai Dooj, and Chhath celebrations.

Writing on his WhatsApp channel, Gandhi said, “It’s the month of festivals — Diwali, Bhai Dooj, Chhath. In Bihar, these festivals mean more than just devotion; they’re about returning home to the warmth of family, the familiarity of the village, and the love of loved ones. However, this longing has turned into a struggle.”

He described overcrowded trains with passengers exceeding capacity by 200 per cent, many clinging to doors and roofs in unsafe conditions. “The government’s claim of running 12,000 special trains sounds hollow in the face of such chaos,” Gandhi alleged.

Questioning the worsening situation year after year, Gandhi placed responsibility squarely on the ruling National Democratic Alliance. “Why do conditions deteriorate each year? Why must people from Bihar endure such humiliating journeys? If there were enough employment and dignity at home, they wouldn’t have to travel thousands of kilometers,” he argued.

“These aren’t helpless passengers; they are living evidence of the NDA’s failed policies and broken promises. Safe and dignified travel is a right, not a favour,” Gandhi added.

His remarks come amid mounting concerns over migrant workers’ hardships and festival travel woes, highlighting the urgent need for improved infrastructure, better governance, and reforms to ensure safe, accessible, and humane transportation for all citizens.
